The Field Study Trip Program

ES-Field Study TripOur Field Study Trip program is one of the most special features of the Department of Environmental Studies at Antioch University New England. Our trips set our graduate program apart from more traditional programs, and reflect our commitment to field-based, collaborative teaching and learning.

Students in our field courses travel with AUNE Environmental Studies faculty to study natural and cultural history, ecology, conservation, and environmental justice in various regions throughout the United States and the world. Students can study wolf ecology and management in Yellowstone National Park, tropical ecology in Costa Rica, desert ecology in the Sonoran Desert, alpine flora in the White Mountains, forest and tundra ecology on Mount Desert Island or in Alaska, coastal geoecology on Cape Cod, and environmental justice in New Orleans. These trips offer special and rare opportunities for students to synthesize material learned in on-campus courses and to apply ideas and knowledge in new natural and cultural landscapes. And, because we meet with local and regional experts in the areas we visit, students also build collaborations with ecologists, conservationists, environmental educators, and environmental advocates around the world. Students and alums frequently comment that the learning and friendships from their field study trips are the highlight of their graduate studies at Antioch University New England.

Field study trips are an optional part of our curriculum, but we strongly encourage all students to take advantage of these courses if finances and schedules allow. Costs range from $300-$2700 depending upon length of the trip and distance traveled. Trips last from five days to three weeks. All courses are credited and applied to degree requirements. New trips are regularly rotated into our trip schedule, so check back in coming months for updates!
